The New Rock Wing at Mater Misericordiae University Hospital
The new Rock wing at the hospital includes a new intensive care unit and national isolation unit. It delivers 98 single-occupancy rooms for an additional 5000 patients annually, reducing the impact on critical services within the hospital and wider community. The new National Isolation Unit will be used for major infectious disease cases such as Ebola and will play an important part in any future pandemic. The new building won ‘Building of the Year – Medical and Health’ Awards at the Building & Architect of the Year Awards.
Brief
The hospital required new hermetic glass doors for its new Rock Wing to help reduce airborne infections and meet energy efficiency design targets.
Solution
Dortek supplied hermetic sealing sliding glass doors with fixed glazed side panels. The hermetic doors met the energy efficient design requirements of the hospital by helping to reduce air handling costs. They also helped to maximise light and space across the ward and to provide easy and safe access for staff and patients. We also supplied specialist internal windows which were lead lined with integrated venetian blinds for privacy. Some of the windows were fire rated with lead lining and integrated blinds with activation on both sides.
