Our company was founded over 55 years ago.
Since then, we've become global leaders in specialist door solutions for demanding environments.
1960’s
- It all began in 1968
- The O’Mara’s worked in the abattoir industry and managed a large bacon company in Limerick, Ireland.
- They started looking for a hygienic alternative to steel doors, something that wouldn’t corrode when exposed to salt or moisture.
- After some research they found that GRP would be an ideal solution for hygienic food environments.
- The O’Mara’s bacon company signed the technology grade agreement with Wenplast to manufacture a hygienic GRP door for the food industry.
1970’s
- The Wenplast company began growing rapidly in Ireland and began exporting to the UK.
- Ireland joined the European Economic Community (EEC).
- Wenplast increased the door colour offering to include a wider selection of colours than just grey.
1980’s
- As a growing need developed for hygienic doors the company modified the door for the pharmaceutical sector.
- The UK business and Hull office is set up in 1989 under the Dortek Ltd name.
- The company developed its first specialised high traffic retail door and started selling to the supermarket sector.
1990’s
- Dortek pioneered the first hygienic fire door with an intumescent strip and the first successful fire test was completed.
- The first sale into mainland Europe was made to a global leading pharmaceutical company.
- Dortek undertakes its first project in the Philippines
- Dortek started product innovation for a range of hygienic sliding doors, hermetic sealing doors and automations.
2000’s
- 2005: Dortek achieves fire testing to EN standards on a doorset.
- 2005: The first Singapore fire test was passed.
- 2006: Dortek first exported to Asia and Dortek Hygienic Door Systems Pte Ltd is established with an office in Singapore.
- 2007: The first vaccine facility project is completed with in excess of 300 doors.
- 2008: The first operating theatre project is completed.
2010’s
- 2011: The first sale in the Middle East is made for Hamad General Hospital, Qatar.
- 2012: Dortek finalises a global agreement with the leading food company in the world to supply infant nutrition facilities with our doors.
- 2013: The Dortek fire test portfolio exceeds 50 test certificates in over 6 countries.
- 2014: The company sells its first door to the US market.
- 2015: The largest ever Dortek project is completed for the Francis Crick Institute in London, UK. The project is worth 2 million Euros and involves the supply of over 500 hygienic doors for the well-known biomedical Institute.
- 2015: The first fire door testing is undertaken to meet UL standards for the US market.
- 2016: Dortek Inc is established in the US and the office is opened in Conshohocken.
- 2017: Dortek successfully acquires Interdoor and forms Dortek AB in Ystad, Sweden.
- 2018: The number of countries to which Dortek is exporting to exceeds 30.
2020’s
- 2020: Dortek manufactures doors for 12 different vaccine facilities across 6 different countries, some which were part of the US operation warp speed programme (OWS) which delivered 300 million doses of a safe, effective vaccine for COVID-19 by January 2021.
- 2021: Dortek completes the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital project in the US.
- The company launches a full rebrand with a new modernised logo and website.
- 2022: Dortek doubles their production floor space in Ireland by expanded into a new building.
- Present day: Dortek is a globally recognised brand that is leading the industry and supplying our doors across the world to leading pharmaceutical, healthcare, food and retail companies. We have manufactured over 250,000 doorsets and completed over 3,000 projects in the last 5 years alone.
