The project included a refurbishment of the existing operational hospital which included installing 2 x single slide hermetically sealing automated glass doors with side screens, 1 x Automated pair F30 GRP hinged doors into existing ICU Dept and 1 x Bi parting hermetically sealing automated glass sliding doors. On enquiry we discovered that 2 existing Large wards were to be split into 2 areas by using fixed glazed screens and hermetic automated glass sliding doors. This will allow for maximum visibility for nursing staff. The doors needed to be easy to use, clean, hermetically sealed, and automatic if possible.

Solution

In partnership with a large Main Contractor based in Bristol, Dortek provided their range of Automated Hermetically Sealing Sliding Doors over fixed glazed side screens. Combination of high patient visibility without the need to open the door plus accurate clean air control between rooms makes this door the ideal solution in Hospital Intensive Care Units. Dortek were asked to replace the existing doors with a more functional and hygienic alternative to meet these goals.

Solution

Dortek supplied and installed specialist glazed bi-parting doors across the hospital’s isolation suites. The doors were supplied with automations to aid infection control and provide convenient, touch free access. The large flush glazed doors facilitated the flow of natural light to the suites and nursing areas. The doors also had Integrated blinds to maintain patient privacy.

The facility runs with a typical cascading air pressure regime with air passing from production rooms into a barrier corridor. During a routine cleaning exercise a small amount of dust was observed on the extract grilles of the doors leading from the production areas to the barrier corridor. The existing doors were hollow core and there were concerns that the voids inside the doors may also contain bacteria loaded dust, so ARC carried out an investigation. Microbiological testing of samples taken from within the hollow door voids determined that the dust was indeed carrying multiple forms of bacteria, which is a major risk to facility operations.

Solution

ARC specified Dortek hygienic GRP doors to remove the possibility of further bacterial growth. Dortek doors are extremely light weight and the seamless solid core construction ensures that bacterial growth cannot reoccur. The moulded GRP shell is incredibly robust ensuring that effective surface decontamination, using a variety of gaseous sterilants can be performed, without the risk of the door integrity being compromised. The project used a variety of Dortek sliding and hinged doors to maximise functionality, maintain optimum hygiene levels and improve layout & personnel flows.

Dortek's brief was to supply and installation of doors to a very specific programme, across primarily 3 floors.

Our Dortek doors were installed within the BRF rooms, laboratories, holding room, procedure rooms, CL3 labs, equipment store, changing rooms, and circulation routes. The type of doors we installed were GRP hinged and sliding in stainless steel frames, many with integrated privacy panels.

Solution

The particular project requirements that made our doors suitable was the durability, acoustic performance, non organic door quality of our SS frame which ensures suitability to this environment. The SS frame had previously been used at Francis Crick Institute also.

We fulfilled the clients expectations by meeting the specification and programme, and working closely with planners to interface with other trades. There was some complexity about the project as most doors are very large for equipment access and some have acoustic requirements, also to include is there are a lot of doors in a concentrated area.

From the outset, Dortek worked alongside the project team to identify key areas that would require specialist molded fiberglass doors. This collaboration allowed the team to use specific design details that Dortek have developed over its time working in world class medical research facilities. Some of these details included: Extended frame backstop – this protects the back edge of a door from heavy rolling loads when opened at 90 degree angle. Dortek’s integral blind system – Inta Vista. This blind incorporates both the blackout function and red tint film needed in behavioral research areas.

These details, along with university specific hardware and design considerations were incorporated into a strong project specification. Dortek worked with Power Construction to coordinate submittals, delivery scheduling, installation and commissioning through a seamless process.

Solution

Dortek supplied 147 Molded FRP door sets along with 5 glass sliding doors for this project. FRP fire doors were required in some circumstances, Dortek’s UL 10C rated fire doors allowed the designers to keep aesthetic consistency throughout each area using rated and non rated doors. Stainless Steel frames were utilized on this project as this facility type is known to have heavy racks and carts moving along corridors at regular intervals. The use of stainless frames offers more design flexibility durability over extended periods of time.

The hospital needed specialist glass sliding doors for its new 120 single occupancy rooms and isolation rooms which will be crucial for rehabilitation purposes and in the control of infections and MDROs. The design concept is one in which patient wards are formed around a series of courtyards bringing landscaping, views, natural light and ventilation into all of the patient spaces whilst supporting patient movement and circulation in a safe and secure environment in the building.

Solution

Dortek supplied 120 glass sliding isolation room doors into the hospital to create a light and airy feel for its single occupancy rooms. The large flush glass doors were supplied with glass side panels to provide maximum visibility for patients and staff without the need to enter the room. Some doors were also supplied with a motion sensor and sensor pad for hands-free operation. These touch-less sensors are ideal for infection control purposes and for personnel carrying objects or pushing carts. The doors were also supplied with integrated electronic interstitial blinds between the glass panes to maintain patient privacy and ease of cleaning. Isolation room doors were also supplied with a hermetic sealing function to aid hygiene and air quality control.

The Mead Johnson facility in Victoria, Australia is a hygienic blending and repackaging facility which supplies a range of products to the domestic and Hong Kong markets. It is a typical clean facility with rooms running at a variety of air pressures to maximise containment and minimise the risk of product cross contamination. Mead Johnson needed all doors installing and commissioning during a scheduled annual shutdown period to ensure that manufacturing output was not affected.

Solution

As with any clean processing or packaging facility, hygiene and the ability to clean quickly and easily were key considerations. Mead Johnson selected Dortek hygienic GRP doors for their seamless, lightweight and easy clean nature. All doors and frames are individually manufactured to suit applications, with hardware factory installed ensuring that site installation time is kept to a minimum. Without needing to fix handles, locksets and hinges onsite, the time taken to complete installation is reduced significantly, meaning the first phase of the project was completed on time and well within the 5 day shutdown period available.

Dortek's brief for this project in Africa was to provide a mixture of doors for large animal (livestock) holding facility for research, dairy yield and genetics. We were required to provide large, hygienic and strong doors needed for cattle and large livestock, with the additional feature that the doors need to be easily deep cleaned too.

What made the project interesting was that the ILRI is a large animal holding facility therefore we were required to make adequate preparation for the size of livestock that we would be providing for. Dortek fulfilled the expectations of the client and provided the ILRI with hygienic hinged doors and hinged fire doors.

Some of the services that are to be run by the hospital include, MRI, neurology, surgical cases, trauma, gynaecology, obstetrics, Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) cases, dialysis, as well as the production of oxygen in commercial quantities among other health related services which require specialists’ attention.

Dortek's hygienic GRP doors were chosen for the The International Maritime Hospital (GPHA) in Africa over competing steel doors. Steel doors are unsuitable for hygienic areas due to large seams, voids and crevices which made them hard to clean and become perfect breeding grounds for bacteria. With the ultra hygienic construction of our GRP doors we can boast a smooth and seamless surface with a closed cell non organic core that does not harbour bacteria.

Dortek has completed its largest retail project in the world’s biggest furniture retailer, IKEA. The new IKEA Cheras store opened its doors in November 2015, is located in Jalan Cochrane and is very close to the city centre as well as major highways and the future Cochrane MRT station – making it an easily accessible store.

Solution

Dortek manufactured and installed 31 hygienic GRP door sets including single and double action doors plus an automatic GRP sliding door, automatic rapid roll door and internal windows supplied with Stainless Steel frames. Our GRP retail doors, installed by our own team of fitters, are located in the brand new state of the art kitchen and restaurant areas. Dortek retail doors were not originally specified by the architect but once they had seen the high quality of the doors and the hygienic benefits they offer it was the only viable solution.

North Coast Veterinary required a seamless change over in access doors to their operating theatre as their existing timber doors were damaged, rotten and unable to withstand the regular cleaning regimes used in their practice. The new replacement doors needed to fit into the exiting openings, have a better ability to withstand the regular cleaning regimes and withstand trolley impact.

Solution

The existing solid core timber doors were not able to withstand the regular operating theatre washing and chemical cleaning regimes and began to warp and rot. Dortek were able to provide replacement GRP doors and frames that were water and chemical resistant and would never rot or corrode. The GRP hygienic doors were easily washed, cleaned and needed very little maintenance or painting as the colour is inbuilt into the door blade.

The design of the door was presented to the architect when he was initially sourcing for such a product with a water and steam resistant performance as well as better space management qualities. The architect was impressed by the idea of having sliding doors as they require less valuable space than hinged doors; these doors were in fact helpful when it came to the layout planning of the kitchen machinery and equipment. The GSK Barnard Castle site required hygienic door systems that would offer an airlock solution for the passing of raw material into production. The doors needed to offer secure segregation between production machinery and circulation routes and t was important that the doors for this project would also have to fit into restricted and limiting spaces.

Solution

Dortek provided a bespoke solution to each individual requirement with a combination of door types, as available space was at a premium.

Dortek supplied GSK with 6 Dortek Butzbach Novosprint Mono Doors, 5 GRP Sliding Doors (including 2 of Dortek new Telescopic Doors) and 4 Hinged Doors in Aluminium Frames.

For the airlocks, there wasn't a viable alternative to horizontal rolling doors as there was insufficient floor space for hinged doors. There wasn't any space to the sides for sliding doors and no headroom for vertical roller doors. Therefore all doors were interlinked in pairs to provide efficient MAL space.

Doors were installed to a cleanroom system which finished short of the ceiling so acting as a barrier, so creating barriers as opposed to individual rooms. The whole project was conducted whilst the rest of the facility was in full use, so cleanroom conditions surrounded the process.

Dortek fulfilled the GSK's expectations by listening to the brief, their requirements and advising suitable products accordingly, working closely with the walling contractor.

  • Birmingham’s Wholesale Market is the largest integrated market in the UK and one of the largest in Europe with 235 trading units totalling 31,000m2.

The Wholesale Market includes horticultural, meat, fish and poultry markets, as well as warehouses and ancillary accommodation and provides fresh produce to restaurants, hotels, fast food outlets and local retailers across the Midlands and Wales.

It has been located on it’s current site, just south of the Bull Ring in Birmingham City Centre since 1974 but can actually be dated back to 1166 when the Lord of the Manor, Peter de Birmingham, obtain a Royal Charter allowing him to hold a market at ‘’his castle at Birmingham’’.

Birmingham City Council approved plans a few years ago to move the markets to a brand new purpose built site away from the City Centre and close to the Aston Villa Football ground in Witton.

Although it has been subjected to delays over the past few years the new Birmingham Wholesale Market is now close to completion and will open it’s door to traders on Tuesday 8th May 2018.

The new facility is 250 metres long x 70 metres wide and has 39 units all of the same size, giving a total of 78 units on each side. Some units are being shared – one company has bought four units together and for extra space offices have been put in at mezzanine level too.

The two sides are separated by the central blue ‘’Buyers Walkway’’.

Solution

Dortek have manufactured and installed 33 Hygienic GRP Single Action Doors and 13 Hygienic Observation Windows (all with GRP Frames) across 20 of the units.

Dortek GRP doors were chosen for these specific 20 units because these areas will be subject to regular wash downs and the Wholesale Market needed doors and windows that would not be affected by water or the use of cleaning chemicals.

We have fitted low profile DDA approved thresholds to first floor doors to ensure that water does not flow into the rooms.

Our doors have been installed in various types of locations including Toilets, entry to Rest Rooms, Store Rooms and Offices with some doors given extra security measures with the use of specified Code Locks.

Dortek has recently completed work on the largest IKEA store in South East Asia and the 5th largest IKEA store in the world. The IKEA store is the second store to be opened in Thailand and had taken 21 months to build.

Dortek manufactured and installed 40 hygienic GRP door sets including single and double action doors, all with GRP frames. Our GRP doors, installed in conjunction with our partners in Thailand QWERTY Limited, are located in the brand new state of the art kitchen and restaurant areas.

Dortek GRP doors were specified by the architect for this project after they had seen the benefits of our doors in the two most recent stores built in Malaysia at Cheras and Johor Bahru. They recognised the high quality of the doors and the hygienic benefits they offer as well as the pleasing aesthetics and the low long term maintenance costs.

Solution

All of our GRP doors and frames were manufactured in the clients chosen colour, Super White, with all single action doors fitted with either lever handles and sash locks or latches and pull handles with dead locks. Some doors are also fitted with electro-magnetic locks to enable the client to link them up to Security Access systems such as card swipes or code locks.

The majority of GRP door sets are fitted with clear double glazed laminated safety glass vision panels and all door blades have been fitted with 500 mm high stainless steel kick plate protection to both sides of the door blades.

Dortek GRP doors were chosen for these particular areas which require high standards of hygiene over steel or timber laminate doors because they will not swell, rot, warp or rust in wet conditions. Their ultra clean construction prevents bacteria from harbouring and they are not affected by the use of cleaning materials. Dortek GRP doors are a high quality low maintenance solution which helps reduce both costs and improve performance long term.

Bang Yai is the third IKEA project that Dortek has worked on in Asia and we are very happy to confirm that we have received the order to supply GRP doors to the new IKEA store that will open in Penang, Malaysia in 2019.

Dortek have installed GRP double action traffic doors into every IKEA store throughout the UK and Ireland and also in IKEA stores in Melbourne and Canberra, Australia.

Abbvie required a complete door, frame, hardware and window package from one manufacturer that could seamlessly integrate into the cleanroom walls and operate successfully to the demands of a pharmaceutical cleanroom environment. Track Record – Dortek have supplied doors previously to Abbvie in Ireland over many years and also have a very strong presence in Singapore where they have supplied all of the cleanroom doors to the vast majority of pharmaceutical projects built in the Tuas Biomedical Park since 2002.

Local Certification – A 2 hour Singapore fire certification independently tested by TUV Sud PSB for both hinged and sliding doors.

Local Service and Maintenance – Very important not only to be able to supply and install the door and window package during the building construction phase but also to be able to offer service and maintenance on an ongoing basis for the lifetime of the facility; particularly in this facility where a high percentage of the doors are also fitted with Dortek’s swing door automation. Upon project completion Dortek were awarded a yearly renewed preventative maintenance contract.

Product – Dortek was able to offer its usual benefits of a seamless, smooth, ledge free, robust, easy to clean door which is very user friendly. Also of particular focus was the 2 piece frame which Dortek supplied; this frame fully wraps around the door opening reveal protecting the corners of the walls and saving the wall contractor the time and expense of finishing the opening reveal in plasterboard. Dortek also supplied and installed all of the door automations and around 46 cleanroom windows supplied in the same 2 piece wrap around frame.

The main focus is private elective surgery with six theatres, a two bed ICU facility, forty-one inpatient beds, twenty-four day surgery beds, six day surgery chairs along with a fully equipped Cardiac Catheterisation Lab.

The architects needed fire rated sliding doors for operating theatres on this project. As there was tight space, hinged doors would take up too much swing room in the corridors so the sliding doors were an ideal solution for ease of entry for trolley bed access to the theatres. The doors also needed to have a fire rating to the New Zealand fire standards as they were being used in a fire rated wall and Dortek were able to provide all the necessary certification for these door types. As these were operating theatres, the doors need to be of a high hygienic standard.

The project brief was very technical, critical care and isolation areas needed to maintain a pressure differential of 50 pascals. Walls and doors needed to be flush glazed glass with blinds to maintain patient privacy but also so staff had full vision of patients.The layout was inspired by the Griffin Hospital in Derby, Connecticut, USA. The critical care unit has visitors / relative’s accommodation around the perimeter, separated from clinical areas and the critical care beds by glazed screens with internal blinds. This allows family to be close to their relatives whilst minimising disruption to the wards and minimising the risk of infection.
